Grant Writer

Position Summary
The Grant Writer will support the organization and advancement team to write and review grant proposals, cover letters, appeals and acknowledgements, produce stewardship reports, and develop online materials. The Grant Writer will coordinate all Family League-related grant seeking and grant management activities. It is critical that the Grant Writer work collaboratively across various departments and successfully under tight timelines.  

 Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with various internal departments to transform ideas into proposals; interact with constituencies involved in identifying and soliciting grants and pursuing other funding opportunities.
  • Conduct prospect research to identify and qualify prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors to support funding priorities, assessing wealth potential, organizational and individual linkages, and philanthropic motivation.
  • Coordinate with Advancement and Initiative teams to develop, produce, and submit proposals.
  • Prepare and submit Intent to Apply forms, when required. Prepare draft proposals, ensuring core questions have been answered in the required proposal format. Gather required attachments and manage the document development and approval process from start to finish.
  • Collaborate with finance and initiative teams to develop budgets for grant proposals and applications; work with the CFO to secure financial reports for funders. Manage timely completion of grant reports and renewal applications. Implement and maintain reporting and renewal calendar, prepare reports and renewals for submission, and obtain necessary information from program directors/managers as required.
  • Prepare and process letters (appeals and acknowledgements), presentation materials, and stewardship reports; maintain funding opportunity database and related confidential files; prepare and update initiative and grant descriptions and other web-based materials.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and agency committees; attend funder briefings as required.
  • Keep appropriate staff informed of grant application and reporting activity, awards and declines; submit monthly internal reports of activity.

 Other Functions

  • Provide technical assistance to Family League staff and partner agencies around resource development and grant writing.
  • Provide a broad range of database maintenance support, including updating contact information, record prospect information, proposal submissions, and outcomes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Advancement.

Experience Requirements 

  • Commitment to working with a diverse team on implementing culturally inclusive practices and participating in dialogue on equity in the communities served.
  • Expertise in philanthropic grant prospecting and proposal writing required.
  • Minimum of three-five years of professional writing strongly preferred.
  • Understanding and knowledge of Baltimore and Baltimore’s funding landscape strongly preferred.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and research skills. 
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal/human relations skills. 
  • Ability to translate subject matter information/concepts into lay terms. 
  • Ability to listen and develop information into compelling proposals. 
  • Ability to transform ideas into interesting, “attention getting” written text. 
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively. 
  • Familiarity with development databases and other research resources. 
  • Baltimore city residency strongly preferred.

Travel Requirements 
While performing the duties of this job, employees will be occasional required to travel to meetings and events throughout Baltimore City and the surrounding region. Out of town, overnight travel may be required on rare occasions.

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Independent and reliable mobility to off-site events is required.

Additional Information 
This position is eligible for compressed work week [after 90 days of employment].
This position is able to be part-time or full-time.
Hourly wage is $26.44.
