President & CEO

The President and CEO is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of Family League’s operations and for inspiring confidence with internal and external stakeholders. The President and CEO will serve as a trusted and engaging ambassador, fostering and developing deep relationships across Baltimore, and nationally, with key funders, partners, advocates and political entities. Combining a personal commitment to service with a dedication to operational and programmatic excellence, the President and CEO will promote Family League’s vision and embody its core values of stewardship, performance, trust, respect and innovation. She or he will also serve as an avid fundraiser, proactively promoting programs that enhance the lives of the City’s children, youth and families. They will lead a dedicated team of over 50 talented leaders and professionals, and directly manage the executive leaders of Finance, Operations, Strategy and Advancement.

As the critical leader in achieving the mission of the organization, the President and CEO reports directly to the Board of Directors and serves as a member of the Mayor’s Cabinet. The President and CEO will also determine, and assure successful implementation of, a strategic plan for Family League. The President and CEO has overall responsibility for strategic and financial planning and implementation of all projects, programs and other initiatives of Family League.

Essential Functions

  • With the support of senior staff, lead all operations and staff, with ultimate accountability for the success of the organization
  • Build and mentor a high-performing leadership team, hiring and developing key talent across a multi-generational, diverse team to effectively advance Family League’s mission
  • Work in concert with the Board of Directors and participate on all board committees
  • In concert with the CFO, develop and manage Family League’s annual budget with a focus on fiscal responsibility and stewardship of resources
  • Continue to build and enhance Family League’s culture with a person-centered and restorative approach
  • Engage meaningfully with community members from all areas of Baltimore City, and encourage the implementation of effective community engagement strategies for the whole organization
  • Drive fundraising to meet annual goals and develop and implement growth strategies
  • Serve as the external face of the organization, enhancing Family League’s visibility, brand recognition and credibility 
  • Serve as a thought leader and advocate for children and families in Baltimore, engaging with leading thinkers and contributing to the growth and success of the relevant fields 
  • Maintain and grow existing relationships with government funders including Baltimore City, Governor’s Office for Children, state and federal agencies 
  • In partnership with the Board and with the support of various employees, create and cultivate relationships with major donors (individuals, corporations, and foundations), building a broad base of support and a network of champions for Family League
  • Develop and manage strategic relationships with key partners (including, but not limited to: Baltimore’s Promise, ABAG, Every Hour Counts, Coalition for Community Schools, funding partners, colleges and universities, etc.) in order to deepen Family League’s reputation as a thought leader and advance its mission
  • Support the board chair to recruit and build the Board to advance Family League’s mission and vision
  • In partnership with the leadership team monitor and evaluate the impact of Family League’s initiatives and services, creating a continuous feedback loop to drive improvement of outcomes
  • Maintain an ongoing understanding of collective impact, children and family services, and Baltimore education and human services landscape; apply this understanding to organizational priorities, initiative focus areas, and funding strategies
  • Set the tone for a creative, innovative, entrepreneurial approach to initiative and services development and improvement

Education, Experience and Skills Required

  • Commitment to working with a diverse team on implementing culturally inclusive practices and participating in dialogue on equity in the communities served
  • A Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of executive management experience strongly preferred with expertise in the areas of organizational management and advancement, strategic leadership, and nonprofit management 
  • Experience managing budgets of over $20 million with multiple funding sources 
  • Strong organizational leadership skills, with an ability to articulate a clear and inspiring vision while encouraging collaboration and building consensus 
  • Demonstrated success leading a high-performing organization, business unit, or team, through significant change and/or growth
  • A disciplined and innovative thinker, with a track record of developing strategies in the face of complexity and ambiguity 
  • Ability to build trust through effectively balancing the needs of both transparency and confidentiality
  • Strong familiarity with Baltimore City culture, social issues, public systems, and political dynamics
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop strong relationships across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders, and to influence leaders in public, private and non-profit sectors
  • Excellent public speaking and communication skills with the ability to be a listener and evaluator and the judgment to make realistic and clear-cut decisions
  • Ability to interact, persuade and collaborate with elected and appointed officials, staff, customers, the public, and partners
  • Strong appetite to lead fundraising activities, with a preference for someone with a successful track record in creative and innovative fundraising 
  • A keen intellect, with the ability to be an independent thinker and creative problem solver
  • Passion for and commitment to children and families and Baltimore, as a whole
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, warmth, and compassion
  • Strong dedication to and passion for the mission and vision of Family League
  • Baltimore City residency is required within 90 days of hire

Travel Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the President and CEO is regularly required to travel throughout the neighborhoods of Baltimore City and the surrounding region. Approximately 50% of time is spent traveling to meetings, conferences and other events out of the office. Occasional overnight out-of-town travel is also a requirement of this position. Daily access to reliable personal transportation is required.

Additional Information
This position is classified as essential, and is required to report to work when the office is open during periods of inclement weather or other emergencies.
Salary range is $160,000-175,000.
